Al-Hadhiri: What is the importance of having “offices” of the National Oil Corporation abroad?
Written by oil expert “Othman Al-Hadhiri”
It is important that oil institutions in any country, especially in Libya whose economy depends heavily on this sector, operate with transparency and are held accountable to the public. For this reason, we are still waiting for the management of the National Oil Corporation to publish clear profit and loss statements related to its subsidiaries and offices abroad (often described as irresponsible or loosely managed external entities).
This is a legitimate demand that reflects the public’s right to know the truth and to hold accountable any form of mismanagement or wrongdoing.
The practice of hiring employees based on tribal or personal affiliations rather than on competence and merit has a negative impact on institutional performance. It leads to declining services and weaker economic returns. Therefore, it is essential that the corporation adopts transparent and fair recruitment policies that ensure the selection of the most qualified candidates.
We strongly encourage the management of the National Oil Corporation to open channels of dialogue with the public. We also recommend the publication of regular and credible financial reports, so that the institution becomes a model of transparency and accountability. This would strengthen public trust and contribute to the development of the oil sector in service of the country and its citizens.
This is the “Sidra tree” that everyone must hold on to, and the “horse” that must lead Libya toward a more stable and prosperous future.
