Exclusive: Central Bank: Nearly 100 Billion Dinars in Foreign Currency Sold to Commercial Banks to Date; We Will Continue Selling Foreign Currency for All Purposes
The Central Bank of Libya told our source exclusively that the total amount of foreign currency sold to commercial banks as of July 21, 2026, reached US$15.7 billion, equivalent to approximately 100 billion Libyan dinars.
The amount was distributed as follows:
- Approximately US$5 billion for personal purposes, including bank cards and cash.
- Approximately US$10.7 billion for letters of credit, transfers, and cards for small traders.
The Central Bank added that it has also approved applications for letters of credit and transfers worth approximately US$3.5 billion. These funds will be sold to commercial banks in the coming period.
This brings the total volume of demand received by the Central Bank for letters of credit and transfers alone to approximately US$14 billion, covering the market’s needs for the coming months.
The Central Bank further confirmed that it will continue selling foreign currency to commercial banks for all purposes in order to meet domestic market demand for various goods.
According to the Central Bank, the policy aims to absorb accumulated demand and stabilize the market, particularly in terms of exchange rates and the availability of goods across different categories.
