Exclusive.. Dinars 100 Billion Annual Fuel Bill: Anti-Smuggling System Ready, Legal Decision Delays Implementation
Our special sources that official documents issued by Brega Petroleum Marketing Company and the Office of the Secretary-General of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet show that the technical and financial procedures for the fuel anti-smuggling system project have been completed, and that the file has been referred to the General Administration of Legal Affairs to prepare the required decision.
The sources explained that despite the file being ready, the decision has not yet been issued. This places responsibility on the Director of the General Administration of Legal Affairs for delaying action on a vital project, at a time when the annual fuel bill exceeds LYD 100 billion, according to the estimates submitted for the project.
According to the sources, installing the system would help reduce the bill to approximately LYD 50 billion by curbing smuggling and waste and regulating the movement of fuel from its source to distribution stations.
The sources asked: When will the decision be issued? And who will bear responsibility for the continued drain on public funds?
