Our exclusive sources revealed that flights at Misrata International Airport were delayed yesterday due to the airport administration’s failure to provide fuel for the operational generators.
The sources added that Misrata International Airport witnessed delays in air traffic on Tuesday evening, August 4, as a result of the failure to supply diesel fuel to the electricity generator designated to power the runway lighting system (airfield) and the control tower building, despite these systems being among the airport’s most sensitive facilities and directly linked to aviation safety and security.
The sources stated that this resulted in a 25-minute delay to a Turkish Airlines flight while passengers were already on board, as well as a delay of one hour and seven minutes for a Berniq Airways flight heading to Cairo.
The sources explained that the airport’s operations rely on only one electrical generator to power these critical systems, while technical standards for airport operations require at least two generators to ensure service continuity and prevent disruptions to air traffic in the event of any failure or fuel shortage.
The sources confirmed that flight delays are not merely an inconvenience for passengers or a financial loss for airlines; rather, they reflect a failure in the management of a vital facility directly connected to aviation safety and the continuity of airport operations.
The sources pointed out that an urgent investigation is required to determine the causes of the negligence, identify those responsible, and take the necessary measures to ensure a permanent fuel supply for backup operational systems, while complying with aviation safety requirements to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
