The Financial Times reported today, Thursday, that Germany’s Federal Court of Justice upheld the enforcement of an international arbitration ruling requiring Libya to pay more than £16 million over a dispute concerning a 2008 contract with the US defense company General Dynamics. The contract involved the supply of communications and information systems to the 32nd Reinforced Brigade, which was commanded by Khamis Gaddafi at the time.
The newspaper confirmed that the International Chamber of Commerce’s Court of Arbitration issued a ruling in 2016 ordering Libya to pay £16.1 million, in addition to interest and costs.
The newspaper also noted that the German court rejected Libya’s claim of sovereign immunity and ruled that the contract constituted a commercial transaction and could therefore be enforced in Germany, according to the newspaper.
