Italian energy company Eni announced on Tuesday that the Bouri gas project had been completed in partnership with Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) through the Mellitah Oil and Gas joint venture, with commissioning activities now underway. The project will enable the recovery of associated gas produced at the Bouri offshore field in western Libya.
The Italian company said the project involved the construction and installation of a new gas recovery unit at Bouri, along with the associated infrastructure, enabling the recovery and processing of gas that was previously flared. The project represents one of the energy sector’s key emissions-reduction initiatives and is expected to improve the environmental performance of Libya’s production system by cutting greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
Eni explained that the recovered gas would be supplied to the domestic market, providing additional production of approximately 700 million standard cubic metres per year. This would help meet demand from the power generation sector while also supporting additional gas volumes for export to Europe through the Greenstream pipeline.
According to the company, the project includes the construction and installation of a new gas recovery unit at Bouri and its associated infrastructure, allowing previously flared gas to be recovered and processed. The initiative is considered one of Libya’s major energy-sector emissions-reduction projects and is expected to improve the environmental performance of the country’s production system by reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The company also stated that the recovered gas would be supplied to the domestic market, adding approximately 700 million standard cubic metres of production annually. This would contribute to meeting demand from the power generation sector and support additional gas exports to Europe through the Greenstream pipeline.
Eni confirmed that the launch of the Bouri gas project reflects its commitment, alongside the National Oil Corporation, to developing Libya’s energy sector through initiatives that combine production growth, operational efficiency, and environmental responsibility. The project forms part of a broader strategy aimed at maximising the value of the country’s gas resources while reducing the emissions intensity of exploration and production activities.
The company added that other strategic developments are currently underway in Libya, including an engineering and mechanical structures project focused on bringing new offshore gas resources into production to meet domestic demand and export requirements. Additional initiatives are also aimed at modernising and upgrading gas production and transportation infrastructure, according to Eni.
