Italy’s Eni Discovers Two New Gas Fields in Libya with Reserves Exceeding One Trillion Cubic Feet
The Italian company Eni announced the discovery of two new gas fields in Libya with total reserves exceeding one trillion cubic feet. The company stated that it drilled two wells in two adjacent geological formations in the Bahr Essalam area, located northwest of Zawiya and Sabratha, about 85 kilometers offshore in waters approximately 650 feet deep.
Eni added that gas-bearing layers were found in both wells within the Metlaoui Formation, which is the main producing reservoir in the area. The data obtained indicates the presence of a high-quality reservoir, and its production capacity has been confirmed through a well test already conducted on the first well.
Eni further noted that initial volumetric estimates suggest the two formations together contain more than one trillion cubic feet of gas. The discovery could be rapidly developed by connecting it to existing offshore facilities, allowing the produced gas to supply the Libyan market as well as be exported to Italy.
