Middle East Monitor reported on Sunday that Washington is preparing to restore a direct diplomatic presence in Libya for the first time in 14 years.
According to the outlet, the U.S. Department of State has informed relevant parties of its intention to move forward with reopening the U.S. Embassy in Libya, proposing $41 million in funding to support the gradual resumption of diplomatic operations and focus on the security measures necessary to protect the mission and its personnel.
The State Department said the requested funding would support a range of security-related activities, suggesting that any return would likely be gradual rather than an immediate full reopening of the embassy.
The outlet noted that the planned diplomatic return highlights the United States’ growing recognition of Libya’s strategic importance—not only as a Mediterranean country with some of Africa’s largest oil reserves, but also as a key player in regional security, migration, and energy markets, according to the report.
