Economic expert Mohammed Al-Barghouthi told our source that the resignation of the Central Bank governor and the recent rise in the fuel import bill should be an occasion to calmly examine the nature of the challenges facing the Libyan economy, rather than an opportunity to enter into a new political conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Barghouthi added that Libya\u2019s economic issue is bigger than individuals and positions and is linked to a series of accumulated imbalances in public finances, government spending, foreign currency consumption, and heavy reliance on imports of goods and fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He explained that the rise in the fuel bill and the unprecedented levels of smuggling, corruption, and theft in this sector confirm that a significant portion of Libya\u2019s oil resources is flowing back abroad to finance domestic market needs and cover the thefts of beneficiaries. This makes addressing the energy sector one of the most important economic issues requiring a long-term vision that goes beyond temporary solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noted that, at this stage, Libya needs to preserve the stability of its financial and monetary institutions and ensure that the Central Bank of Libya continues to operate in a regular and transparent manner that maintains public and market confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also stressed that the governor\u2019s resignation or dismissal should not become a new point of contention between institutions and political actors. Instead, it should provide an opportunity to strengthen the independence of economic institutions and ensure continued operations under clear rules that protect monetary and fiscal policy from fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Barghouthi said that Libya has sufficient resources and capabilities to overcome this stage, but needs greater institutional stability, fiscal discipline, coordination between institutions, and an end to placing responsibility for accumulated imbalances entirely on one party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that the ultimate goal is not to defend an individual or an institution, but to protect the Libyan economy, preserve the value of the dinar and market stability as much as possible, and ensure that oil resources are directed toward development instead of continued increases in the import bill, theft by beneficiaries, corruption, and smuggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
