Fox News: US Describes Libya–Turkey Offshore Oil Agreement as “Unhelpful and Provocative” Amid Angry Regional Reactions
Fox News reported on Monday, citing Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who stated that the maritime agreement between Libya and Turkey is entirely legitimate from both legal and regulatory perspectives.
On the other hand, a spokesperson for the US State Department told Fox News that the announcement of the ratification of the memorandum of understanding on maritime boundary delimitation between Turkey and Libya could lead to escalating tensions in the region.
“This is unhelpful and provocative, and our position on this issue has not changed,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added: “We encourage all countries, including our partners in the Eastern Mediterranean, to resolve maritime disputes through good-faith negotiations and to avoid any provocative actions.”
According to the official spokesperson, “A peaceful resolution to such disputes paves the way for commercial investment and exploration that would benefit the entire region without causing harm,” Fox News reported.
